With her album on the way, the Malmesbury born and Cape Town based artist releases her debut single and music video. She reveals her ability to create her own universe, namely Practice Room (which is her Debut Project set to be released in the first half of 2019). Hailing from Malmesbury, the soulful songstress has been harmonising with the universe since the tender age of 10 with the Tygerberg Children’s Choir. Now at 22, the former U.C.T jazz vocalist has grown tremendously to master her voice and her accompanying sound. Although Practice Room will be her first solo project, Kimberleigh’s voice is already familiar to the city, regularly doing performances with her own and various other bands. Her first offering off her soon to be released album is called “For You”, and is produced by the talented Namibian R&B producer Gina Geanz. The song, a lovely ode to women of colour, flirts with the different experiences that these bodies face and their unceasing ability to live magically. “You’re often so loudly disrespected in spaces where you should be worshipped for the divinity that is you, brown and black woman.” This tantalising release is an introduction to a body of work that has taken her over a year to complete, and which she finally feels like is ready to be received. And trust me, it’s worth the wait.
